Carnations

Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) are very popular flower used by florists. The bloom of the carnation can have up to 40 petals in a wide variety of solid, striped and multicolored patterns. Carnations are grown widespread commercially. Because of this, different colors have developed different meanings: pink signifies mother's love, red means deep love, and yellow means dejection, to name a few. In general, however, Carnations mean fascination.

Carnations need a few hours of full sun daily and should be kept well watered. Carnations grow up to 18 inches tall and make great borders or edging in a yard or garden plot. They should be spaced a foot apart.

As Carnations are so easy to grow and popular in flower arrangements, there is very little you can't do with a Carnation in a bouquet. A good florist will make sure to match the color with the occasion, but since there are so many different color patterns to choose from, carnations can accent any other flower or bouquet. Carnations are hardy and have a long vase life.
